Latest research on Busulfan

Busulfan is a bifunctional alkylating agent, having a selective immunosuppressive effect on bone marrow. It is not a structural analog of the nitrogen mustards. It has been used in the palliative treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (myeloid leukemia, chronic), but although symptomatic relief is provided, no permanent remission is brought about. According to the Fourth Annual Report on Carcinogens (NTP 85-002, 1985), busulfan is listed as a known carcinogen. [PubChem]

Latest findings

Indeed, several studies in animal models showed that transplantation of animal or human MSCs from different sources may regenerate nonfunctional ovaries, pre-sterilized by Cyclophosphamide, an alkylating antineoplastic agent, which is also used in human medicine (chemotherapy), and/or Busulfan. The patient received unrelated hematopoietic stem cell transplantation from a 1-allele mismatched donor after undergoing Busulfan, Etoposide, Cyclophosphamide, and antithymocyte globulin-based conditioning. [source, 2016]
Cyclophosphamide (CY) in combination with either ablative doses of total body irradiation (TBI) or the oral alkylating agent Busulfan (Bu) is the most common conditioning regimen for aHSCT. [source, 2016]
Busulfan (Sigma-Aldrich, St Louis, MO, USA, B2635; 40 mg/kg) was used in order to eliminate endogenous testicular germ cells in 4-week-old recipient BALB/c nude mice (n = 4) (ORIENTBIO INC. [source, 2016]

Subsequently, he underwent a reduced intensity conditioning matched-related donor stem cell transplant (MRD-HCT) with Fludarabine and Busulfan (FluBu) conditioning chemotherapy. [source, 2016]
In the pilot animal study, normal rat testes were compared with those that have been injected with two doses of Busulfan – an alkylating agent that temporarily arrests spermatogenesis. [source, 2016]
The FFOCT technique showed seminiferous tubules of relatively uniform size and shape (diameter 328 ± 11 μm) and hair-like structures the indicative of spermatogenesis in normal rat testis samples compared to the heterogeneity in shape and the size of tubules (diameter 178 ± 35 μm) with only 10% of tubules showing normal spermatogenesis in the mice treated with Busulfan.
