Latest research on Metronidazole

A nitroimidazole used to treat amebiasis; vaginitis; trichomonas infections; giardiasis; anaerobic bacteria; and treponemal infections. It has also been proposed as a radiation sensitizer for hypoxic cells. According to the Fourth Annual Report on Carcinogens (NTP 85-002, 1985, p133), this substance may reasonably be anticipated to be a carcinogen (Merck, 11th ed).

Patients were allowed to receive Metronidazole and Aztreonam for anaerobic and Gram-negative coverage, respectively. [source, 2016]
The test group received a combination of systemic antibiotics consisting of Amoxicillin and Metronidazole daily for 7 days starting the day of surgery, whereas the control group did not receive any antibiotics. [source, 2016]
They concluded that the treatment of intrabony defects with enamel matrix proteins with or without postoperative administration of antibiotics resulted in the same good clinical outcome, which also suggested Amoxicillin and Metronidazole had little to do with the healing of bone defect. Metronidazole can be substituted to Amoxicillin in penicillin-allergic individuals. [source, 2016]
For failure of the first line therapy or for clarithromycin-resistant isolated strains, it is available a bismuth-based quadruple therapy with Omeprazole, bismuth salts, Metronidazole and TETRACYCLINE (OBMT),74 an RCT using a combination of PPI and a single three-in-one capsule tablet showed improved eradication in comparison with standard triple therapy. The choice and dose of antibiotics was surprising (e.g., oral Ciprofloxacin and Metronidazole, plus intramuscular Gentamicin), until we learned that the staff had attended training on STI management and we located the national guidelines for urethral discharge, which included all of these drugs. We established a ‘case definition’ to explore these spikes as if it were an ‘outbreak investigation,’ where cases met all of the following conditions: same clinician handwriting, ‘infection’ diagnosed at post-operative day 7, treated with Ciprofloxacin and Metronidazole, and then ‘resolved’ at the next visit. Administration of Metronidazole (500 mg), orally 3 times per day for 10 days, temporarily improved her symptoms, with a decrease of CRP to 1.58 mg/dL. [source, 2016]
For primary therapy of PMC, oral Metronidazole (500 mg) is administered 3 times per day for 10–14 days. [source, 2016]
In cases of repeated recurrence, oral Vancomycin (500 mg, 4 times per day) is considered and intravenous administration of Metronidazole or a Vancomycin enema is recommended, in combination with oral Vancomycin or alone. [source, 2016]
