Latest research on Ziprasidone

Ziprasidone (marketed as Geodon, Zeldox) was the fifth atypical antipsychotic to gain FDA approval (February 2001). Ziprasidone is Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved for the treatment of schizophrenia, and the intramuscular injection form of ziprasidone is approved for acute agitation in schizophrenic patients. Ziprasidone has also received approval for acute treatment of mania associated with bipolar disorder. [Wikipedia]

Concerning medication, three patients were free of any antipsychotic medication, the others received mono- or dual therapy with atypical antipsychotic medication including Amisulpride (n = 2), Olanzapine (n = 11), Clozapine (n = 4), Quetiapine (n = 2), Ziprasidone (n = 1), Risperidone (n = 5), Aripiprazole (n = 2), Paliperidone (n = 3; cp. Seventy-five patients were taking atypical antipsychotics (Risperidone, Paliperidone, Clozapine, Aripiprazole, Ziprasidone, and/or Quetiapine) at a median Chlorpromazine equivalent dose of 349.20 (277.64) mg/day. [source, 2016]
Intramuscular preparations of the second-generation antipsychotics Ziprasidone,26 Olanzapine,27 and aripiprazole28 have more favorable extrapyramidal side-effect profiles than Haloperidol while providing similar effect sizes for the reduction of agitation. [source, 2016]
Intramuscular injections of these agents are approved by the FDA for treatment of acute agitation associated with schizophrenia (Aripiprazole, Olanzapine, and Ziprasidone)26–28 and bipolar mania (Olanzapine and Aripiprazole)27,28 and they are now recommended over the first-generation antipsychotics in guidelines.2 [source, 2016]
A review summarized the time required to achieve significant alleviation of psychiatric symptoms compared with baseline;37 Paliperidone ER and Risperidone showed alleviation of symptoms from day 4, while Olanzapine, Aripiprazole, and Ziprasidone took 1–2 weeks. [source, 2016]
Solution containing Voriconazole, used in treatment of fungal infections, Nexterone containing Amiodarone, used in ventricular arrhythmia, Geodon containing Ziprasidone, used in schizophrenia, and so forth. [source, 2015]
Third, we found no usable data for analyses of other currently-prescribed atypical antipsychotics, such as Ziprasidone, that met our inclusion criteria. [source, 2015]
He was hospitalized for 87 days and during this time he was treated with Olanzapine, fluoxetine, Ziprasidone, Valproate, lurasidone, and fluphenazine. [source, 2015]
Ziprasidone, was noted to have been effective for treatment of psychosis in the patient’s mother who also has schizophrenia and thus he was started on Ziprasidone 40 mg (bis in die) BID on hospital day 60 with the intent to cross-taper Olanzapine. [source, 2015]
However, patient reported feeling restless on Ziprasidone and no longer wished to continue the cross-taper. [source, 2015]
